Mariner's Compass Quilt Dilemma

Well the time has come to ask my blogging friends for your input on a decision concerning my Mariner's Compass wall hanging. The finished quilt will measure 48" x 48" and I started with this selection of fabric.

I have now progressed to 2 and a half round blocks, using the paper piecing method (oh how I hate paper piecing). The pattern calls for five round blocks, so I still have more paper piecing to do.  Yuck!

These round blocks must be made into square blocks measuring 12" x 12", so my question is, what background fabric should I use to turn these circles into squares.

This cream fabric?

Or this pattern fabric, what do you think?

How pretty. I love the material choices. Well I am sure you will get a lot of answers but I love it with the print. It stands out better without being stark. Either one is a good choice though.

I don't care for the cream...and the pattern is "safe" I would go with the lighter green or a black...it would make those compasses POP!

I like the pattern best. It's subtle but has just the right amount of zip.

Thanks for stopping by and seeing my mosaics. Yours is gorgeous. Did you use Microsoft Research?

If you want the circle to look like it is a square, I think the cream is necessary....If you want the circle to be in a square, you could do any of the prints.

Though I know zilch about quilting, I like the patterned fabric over the cream.
Your mariner's compass quilt is looking great!

I would suggest try it in black.

This is my first visit to your blog...just love all your garden photos especially the purple iris.

My preference has always been to use the fabric that is between the spokes of the MC. Your block is gorgeous.

I like the last one on the printed material. Valerie

I love the print fabric, as it makes the compass stand out a more than on the cream fabric.

Hi Jen
I like the print fabric best too.

Definitely not the cream - the print or even something stronger. The fabrics are so beautiful that it would be a shame to have the quilt be 'ordinary' - all that work!

I like paper piecing, but haven't done anything this big.
I always find these decisions hard, but if you go for the cream it will look like your compasses are floating on a solid background which would be very striking.

I vote for the pattern fabric. At least on my monitor it seems to wake up the reds in the star design. (Spoken like a true non-crafty person, I suppose.) Whatever you decide, I'm certain it will be lovely.

I love quilts. Have every since sleeping under them as a child. I'm not a quilter but have two friends who do an amazing job. One of them has quilted (as a lovely gift) two quilt tops pieced together by my great grandmother. One of them she did while spending a semester abroad (her husband is a professor of history) while living in an old English estate. The locals were very interested since, apparently, that sort of thing isn't done much in England. I like the patterned background but the cream is nice as well. Lovely!

Best,
Bonnie

I would go with a solid to make the colors stand out more. Perhaps a shade of green?
